Key IS Standards Explained
IS 694. PVC Insulated Cables
This is the most important standard for house wiring. It specifies requirements for PVC insulated cables for voltages up to 1100V including:
- Conductor material (annealed copper, 99.97% purity)
- Conductor resistance (maximum values per size)
- Insulation thickness (minimum values per voltage rating)
- Flame retardance tests (FRLS compliance)
- Smoke density limits (for FRLS wires)
- Ageing resistance (insulation must last 20+ years)

IS 8828. Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs)
Specifies requirements for MCBs including tripping characteristics (B, C, D curves), breaking capacity (minimum 6000A for domestic), mechanical endurance (4,000 operations minimum), and electrical endurance (1,500 operations minimum).
IS 12640. Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs)
Specifies that RCCBs must trip within 40 milliseconds when earth leakage exceeds the rated sensitivity (30mA for human protection, 100mA for fire protection). Also covers mechanical endurance and environmental testing.
IS 374. Ceiling Fans
Covers motor insulation class (B minimum), guard wire strength (must withstand 3kg force), air delivery measurements, power consumption limits, and noise levels.
CEA (Central Electricity Authority) Regulations
The CEA under the Ministry of Power sets regulations for electrical installations and safety. Key CEA regulations include:
- CEA (Measures Relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2010: Comprehensive safety requirements for all electrical installations including earthing, wiring, protection, and inspection.
- Earthing Requirements: Every electrical installation must have proper earthing. Minimum two earth electrodes required. Earth resistance must not exceed 5 ohms for domestic installations.

Earthing Standards (IS 3043)
IS 3043 is the Indian standard for earthing. Key requirements include:
- Minimum two earth electrodes per installation
- Earth resistance not exceeding 5 ohms (domestic) or 1 ohm (critical installations)
- Copper earth wire minimum 2.5 sq mm (for domestic)
- Earth electrode must be buried at least 2m deep
- Chemical earthing (maintenance-free) is increasingly preferred
